TomTom XL 340/XL 340-S

$250.00 Released April, 2009

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Gives plenty of warning about oncoming exits, tells you which lane to be in. More info on screen than competitors, all displayed in an easy to view format. IQ route is effective at accounting for traffic patterns.

The Cons:Battery life is very short, needs to stay plugged in. Updating the device is difficult as it comes with almost no internal space free. Only supports USB 1.1 transfers, works fairly slowly.

The TomTom XL 340 and XL 340-S are similarly featured mid-range widescreen GPS devices. The XL 340 is exactly the same as the XL 340-S, except for the added text-to-speech functionality, which is used for street names and places.

The TomTom XL 340/340-S sports a black bezel with chrome trim, unlike its predecessor (XL 330/330-S), which was outfitted with a gray design. Both models feature a 4.3” LCD screen and a removable suction-cup mounting bracket. Improvements in the XL 340 line include a “Quick Menu,” which allows fast access to up to six common GPS functions. Maps have been improved, including seven million points of interests across the U.S. & Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico. XL 340 owners will also get “Advanced Lane Guidance,” which shows what lane the driver should be in. Live traffic is not included; one must purchase a separate traffic receiver and also pay a yearly subscription fee.
