It features a high-precision GPS receiver, a pre-loaded world map, and the capability to load other maps via an SD card slot. The 550 is waterproof and robust. It is also the first of Garmin’s handhelds to include a universally accurate 3-axis electronic compass, as well as a barometric altimeter. Garmin also offers the Oregon 550t, which is the same device, preloaded with topographical maps of the continental U.S. as well as the locations of parks and trails.
