The Garmin Nuvi 500 is a portable, waterproof, multi-mode crossover GPS navigator that can be used either in the car, boat, on two wheels or on foot. It comes preloaded with City Navigator NT maps for the lower 48 states, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and one European country or region.

Other features include millions of points of interest, elevation maps, an emergency locator, support for FM traffic alerts and MSN content, and is capable of uploading geo-tagged photos and points of interest(POI's). Also preloaded are U.S. topographic maps for off road travel and the unit has a MicroSD card slot so you can add cards containing maps such as BlueChart g2 Vision and Inland Lakes Vision marine maps. Among many other features, Nuvi 500 is equipped with HotFix satellite prediction as well as the ability to download geocaches from Geocaching.com straight to the unit.
